A MISSIONARY priest is killed October 17, soon after a farmer is shot dead by soldiers who claimed the farmer was in fact a rebel and was killed in a gunbattle. Bombs are going off in Zamboanga and 19 soldiers are killed in Al-Barka, Basilan, October 18, in what is now being exposed as an uncoordinated military offensive in a rebel stronghold.
