Pagbabago! SoCSKSarGenDS expresses alarm over the already regular power interruptions. The brownouts occur three to four times a day, each lasting more than an hour.
With the upcoming elections set up to be automated and relying on the electronic machine called the PCOS (Precinct Count Optical Scanner), the brownouts could disrupt the actual voting in the May 10, 2010 elections considering that the machine may rely on batteries.
The machine themselves have not been tested yet in terms of its standby back up power which Smartmatic claims could last up to 16 hours.
Despite the assurance of Department of Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes that there will be no brownouts on the day of elections, we remain skeptical since the secretary is going to step down to focus on campaigning for his party-list, in which he is the number one nominee.
With talks of a possible “failure of elections scenario” and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s not too obvious intent to stay in power, the people are apprehensive on whether the brownouts are real or just a conditioning which will lead to the declaration of a failure of elections.
We call on concerned citizens to remain vigilant and prepare for any eventuality. We will oppose any scheme which will lead to a failure of elections scenario. We will oppose even more strongly any set up that will allow President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to stay in power a day longer beyond her term.
