In observance of Isra Wal Miraj (Journey and Ascension of Prophet Mohammad, S.A.W.) corresponding to the 27th day of Rajab, 1430 Hijra, July 20, 2009, Monday, is declared Muslim Holiday. Per Presidential Decree No. 1083 and Section 4 of the Civil Service Commission Resolution No. 81-1277, in Regions 9 and 12, offices and agencies of the national and local government are closed, therefore, Muslims and non-Muslims are all excused from work.

In Islamic tradition, the Night Journey, Isra and Mi'raj are the two parts of a journey that the Islamic prophet Muhammad took in one night, around the year 621. Many Muslims consider it a physical journey but some scholars consider it a dream or vision. The event is celebrated each year via a festival for families, the Lailat al Miraj, one of the most important events in the Islamic calendar. Muslims bring their children to the mosques, where the children are told the story, pray with the adults, and then afterwards food and treats are served. (source: wikipedia.org)
