By Director Joyce Romero Kirkconnell – International Artist
Sala Drama Theater is making an aggressive approach in the Island of Mindanao, and in somewhat a young and modern way.
The play to be presented—An excerpt from National Artist Severino Montano’s “The Love of Leonor Rivera” – adapted now as “Last Love”, to be directed by International Artist Joyce Romero Kirkconnell, whom was inspired by Mrs.Naty Crame Rogers of The Philippine Drama Company.
The newly discovered Lead Talents from Davao City are, Dennis Hoffman of The Holy Cross College of Davao appears as Jose Rizal, and Rose Ann Arana of The Philippine Nikki Jin Kai International School as his “near cousin” and great love Leonor Rivera—whom was also recently played by Julianne Cosning, an employee of Metrolifestyle Fitness&Spa Center of Davao.
The show will be staged on January 16, 2011(Sunday) and on January 23, 2011 (Sunday) at The Philippine Women’s College of Davao – the Alma Matter of Director Joyce Romero Kirkconnell, curtain time will be at exactly 6:00 PM and the full production will run for an hour. Tickets will be priced from P50.00 for students and P100.00 for everyone else who wants to witness this.
Jose Rizal and Senorita Leonor Rivera were formally engaged but as every Filipino knows and should know is that their love was a forbidden love. Parental objections on both sides of the family got in the way of their affair.
Along the risky love affair they had, the waiting and heartbroken Leonor Rivera was later married to an Englishman named Henry Kipping. It will be clearly shown in this play the “hopeless romantic” love affair of our National Hero. The excerpt “Last Love” is a Holiday Project Workshop opened to local students of Davao City.
Sala Drama Theater in Mindavao started in August 2010 in the home of Director Joyce Kirkconnell, when she created her first acting workshop project among family and friends she grew up with to help influence the community and the youth.
Director Joyce Kirkconnell first staged “Last Love” during the weekends of November 2010 in one of the cinemas of SM mall of Davao. Viewers from as far as North Cotabato and Cagayan de Oro City were able to witness the Premiere Show.
It would be a very successful journey for Sala Drama Theater in the Island if everyone as a whole becomes a part of future projects from the very young director and strong in starting to build better Arts in Mindavao— Ms. Joyce Romero Kirkconnell can be contacted at Davao Bayantel Phone number (082) 306-5413 or via Globe # 09152962844 and Sun # 09223757807.
