Members of the Sumbakil Multi-Purpose Cooperative, composed of former Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) combatants, show off the harvest of eggplant grown at their farm in Tupi, South Cotabato. USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program, through its Targeted Commodity Expansion Project (TCEP), introduced the cooperative to the basics of vegetable production and later provided the group with a consolidation warehouse that allows farmer-members to pool their produce and charge higher farm-gate prices. The cooperative can now meet the quality requirements of institutional buyers, such as the General Santos-based tuna cannery that it regularly supplies with sweet peppers. Since 2002, more than 11,000 ex-MNLF fighters have been assisted by GEM to produce higher-value fruits, vegetables and aquaculture products, such as grouper and abalone. GEM
