Students at Ticatapul Elementary School in Zamboanga City learn the basics of word processing using computer resources provided by their parent-teacher association (PTA), in partnership with USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program. Through its Education Awareness Support Effort (EASE), GEM matches funds raised by PTAs to undertake specific education improvement activities in partner schools, including the establishment of computer and science laboratories, mini libraries and multi-media centers. Under the oversight of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), the GEM Program has provided more than 960 schools with EASE educational matching grants, for the benefit of more than six hundred thousand students.
