Butuan – Costing more or less 1 million pesos, Butuan will build the second replica of Balangay which would finally start within this week.
Mr. Greg Hontiveros, President of the Butuan Historical and Cultural Foundation and currently the Chairman of Butuan Balangay Boat Building Project Committee is happy to announce that Master Balangay Project Manager Judail Muyong and 3 of the 8 crew already arrived in Butuan.
They are the master boat builders from Sibuto and Sitangkay in Tawi-Tawi who build the first replica of Balangay in CCP, Manila with the Kaya ng Pinoy Inc. led by Art Valdez.
The perfect spot to build the boat chosen by the Butuan Balangay Boat Building Project Committee is inside the Luna compound in Bading which coincidentally not far from across the riverbank where the now famous Banza Church Ruins is situated, one of Butuan’s historical sites.
In this area the boat shed has been readied for the construction of the second Balangay initiated by the private sector spearheaded by the Butuan Historical & Cultural Foundation and Butuan Global Forum, Incorporated.
According to Mr. Hontiveros, it took more than 3-months to secure the needed lumber which consists of red lawaan for the upper planks, yakal and dungon.
Meanwhile, the 4 Butuan Balangay Crew finalists who just signed the waiver and release form yesterday will depart Butuan on November 11 to join the crew of Art Valdez of the Diwata ng Lahi for their final and official evaluation in Panglao, Bohol.
They will undergo sailing tests and team-building exercises together with the crew of the Diwata ng Lahi namely Leo Oracion, Erwin “Pastour” Emata, Carina Dayondon, Noelle Wenceslao, Janet Belarmino-Sardena, Dr.Ted Esguerra, Fred Jamili and Dr.Voltaire Velasco.
Jody Navarra, member of the Committee on Butuan Balangay Boat Building project and the Corporate Secretary and Trustee of Butuan Global Forum, Inc said they will announce the names of the Butuan Balangay Crew after Art Valdez of the Kaya ng Pinoy Inc. reveals who will qualify to sail with the Diwata ng Lahi from Panglao, Dauis, Maasin, San Bernardo, Jabonga, Cabadbaran before docking Butuan City on November 27.
Port-of-call activities to be undertaken by the City Government of Butuan includes regatta, coastal clean-up, cultural shows and a symposia to be conducted by Kaya ng Pinoy that will highlight the cultural significance of the Balangay and to hold lectures on Philippine maritime history.
It was also learned, that Diwata ng Lahi will stay in Butuan until January as the crew members will take the Christmas Holiday, aside from some minor repairs that need to be done while Butuan Balangay Boat during this time will undergo test sailing.
The voyage of Diwata ng Lahi together with Butuan Balangay Boat resumes in the first week of January 2010 for the 6th of their 10 leg journey which is the Butuan-Ozamis route having a total distance of 191 nautical miles.
The two Balangay’s will dock in Gingoog, Mambajao, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Ozamis.
