Surigao City – An amateur boxing tournament will be showcased on October 3, 2009 inside the Municipal Gymnasium of Bacuag, Surigao Del Norte, to kick off the birth of the country’s most popular sport in this part of Mindanao
Vice-Mayor Columbano Manliguez said the activity will be participated in by more than a dozen pairs of amateur boxers whose goal is to slug it out and give their best to eventually emerge as winners.
“There will really be firepower, a lot of actions and showing of boxing skills. We are pairing and pitting the best amateur talents we have gathered. This tournament, which is also called as Bakbakan 2009, will really provide thrill and entertainment to thousands of spectators from the different barangays of Bacuag and from neighboring municipalities who will be coming in to witness the same. It will surely be fun and exciting. We are thankful that Mayor Shiela Mae has thought of this commendable activity,” Manliguez disclosed.
The Bacuag amateur boxing competition is designed to scout and develop potential pugilists who will eventually join the professional ranks and may bring future honor to the town. The town leadership hopes to produce the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire, Jerry Peñalosa and Marvin Sonsona.
