Robert Barnes, USAID Economic Growth Advisor, shares a light moment with elementary school students after leading the turn-over of 36,000 books to 50 school libraries located throughout the provinces of Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani, and General Santos. The book distribution was held by USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program in partnership with the U.S. based-Children International Foundation. The school libraries had originally been established by the schools’ parent-teacher associations (PTAs), which received education matching grants for the establishment of libraries through GEM’s Education Awareness Support Effort (EASE). The GEM Program matches, peso-for-peso, funds raised by local PTAs for education improvement activities. To date, USAID-GEM has provided 777 EASE education matching grants, valued at more than $820,000, to PTAs of schools across Mindanao. GEM
