Butuan – Combined elements of Buenavista police, 1401st Provincial Police Mobile Group and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency regional office discovered a marijuana plantation.
PDEA Regional Director Atty. Joey Quiriones directed PDEA agents two weeks ago to conduct surveillance of a reported marijuana plantation in a remote area in the municipality of Bueanvista.
Maintaining close watch over the area however was pre-empted when it leaked to the community on Saturday.
The raid was immediately carried out on Sunday-August 23, 2009 around 5 o’clock in the morning by PDEA 13 led by RD Atty. Joel Quiriones and personnel of Buenavista Municipal Police Station led by Police Senior Inspector Artemio Suarez together with 1401st PPMG led by SPO1 Ricardo Abrau in P-7 Sitio Kabalalahan, Brgy Guinabsan, Buenavista, Agusan del Norte which resulted to the arrest of Juan Francisco Cortes alias “Jun”, 50 years old, married and a resident of Brgy Matabao, Buenavista, of said province.
Uprooted and confiscated at the said area were 240 hills marijuana plants and 19 dried marijuana plants which are now under custody of the PNP Crime Laboratory in Camp Rafael Rodriguez.
The confiscated marijuana plants were estimated to be 2 months old and due for harvest next month, which was supposed to be the PDEA’s target date to launch a joint operation to identify behind the planting of marijuana in Sitio Kabalalahan concealed with banana trees and cogon grass.
“The marijuana grown in Buenavista is primarily destined for the domestic market and there is no evidence that marijuana reaches a large market in the region but PDEA 13 shows no sign
of lessening its commitment to the government’s fight against illegal drugs,” said Atty. Quiriones.
Three months ago, PDEA 13 raided a house and arrested a suspect found positive for 88 marijuana sticks and several marijuana plants but failed to locate the marijuana plantation said to be not far from where the raid was conducted last Sunday.
Spotting a marijuana plantation and destroying it is as difficult as knowing where it will be transported.
PDEA 13 RD Quiriones said, hinterlands in Agusan del Sur is the lone province in the region with reported number of marijuana plantations but unable to penetrate by the PNP and PDEA agents due to NPA sightings.
Marijuana remains the most widely used prohibited drug in Caraga because it is easily available and cheaper than shabu used by professionals and students in Butuan City.
Surigao areas do not have reported marijuana plantations but supply was sourced out from Compostela Valley.
