MILF and GRP Peace Panels Wrap Up Special Meeting Today

July 29, 2009 - The MILF and GRP Peace Negotiating Panels ended their two-day special  meeting today, Wednesday, July 29, 2009 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on a high note of renewed optimism that the peace negotiations abruptly stalled last year by the aborted MOA-AD signing will be back on track.

The failed signing of the MILF-GRP MOA-AD on August 5, 2008 led to the renewal of intense fighting between certain base commands of the MILF and the AFP and nearly a year of lull in the peace negotiations. At the height of the fighting in December last year, over 600,000 people, mostly Bangsamoro Muslims from the provinces of Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato, Sarangani, Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte, were displaced. Currently, over 300,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) in Central Mindanao have yet to be rehabilitated and returned to their homes.
