Agusan del Sur Town Councilor Shot Dead, Tribal Chieftain Seriously Hurt

BUTUAN CITY- A town councilor in Sibagat, Agusan del Sur was pronounced dead on arrival at a local private hospital here while his companion tribal chieftain was seriously wounded after motorcycle-riding gunmen shot the two near Sibagat Municipal Hall Monday morning, the police said.

Sibagat police identified the victim town official as Luzvimindo Behing who by virtue of being President of the Association of Barangay Captains of Sibagat was automatically member of the municipal council. Behing is also current Barangay Captain of Padi-ay.

Behing’s companion at the time of the shooting was identified as Datu Mapayao with Christian name Gonzalo Aquillano.

Initial police investigation revealed Behing and Datu Mapayao were boarding single motorcycle with Behing driving on the way to the town hall to attend the Municipal Councilors’ regular session when they were meet by two motorcycle riding men at the uphill road approaching the municipal hall.

One of the two motorcycle riding men shot Behing at close range hitting Behing’s front chest using a .45 cal pistol whose bullet pierced and hit Behing’s back ride Datu Mapayao

The suspects then fled away from the crime scene. It was too late when the police responded whose police station is also located at the Municipal Hall which is just few meters away.

It was not known why the police checkpoint at the road failed to go after the suspects when it fired their firearm.

Responding policemen which came too late brought Behing here in Butuan City which is about more or less 20 kilometers away from SIbagat, Agusan del Sur.

Police said they are still investigating the incident.
