ISULAN, Sultan Kudarat – “Every Friday is Climate Change Day.”
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo intoned to start the Climate Change briefing with government officials and employees held at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Session Hall recently.
To moderate, if not avert the negative effects of Climate Change, President Arroyo said the declaration of every Friday as a Climate Change Day seeks to look into possible solution and discuss environmental issues at every local level.
“Kung tuloy tuloy itong climate change, darating ang araw na ang Mindanao na food basket ng bansa dahil walang typhoon ay magkakaroon ng typhoon at mawawala ang ating hanapbuhay dito pati pagkain ng buong Pilipinas,” the President informed “So kailangan nating iwasan ang Climate Change.”
Climate Change is the direct effect of global warming.
It refers to any long-term change in the patterns of average weather of a specific region or the Earth as a whole.
President Arroyo cited some common factors that aggravate Climate Change such as deforestation, use of fossil fuels and the uncontrolled/unmanaged waste.
Thus, the President reorganized, through Executive Order 774, the Presidential Task Force on Climate Change which will rationalize and synthesize all government programs into one focused campaign to address climate change.
One of those is the Solid Waste Management, a program which is adopted in the province wherein a systematic disposal of wastes is put into operation.
The establishment of Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) for every barangay, according to President Arroyo is cheaper than purchasing a Sanitary Landfill.
Presently, Sultan Kudarat has installed 20 MRFs out of 249 barangays.
If we procure an MRF for each of the remaining 229 barangays, it would cost only P41 M, the President explained, as compared to the price of a single Sanitary Landfill which is P10 M.
MRF is a systematic collection and disposal system for wastes, starting with the segregation of garbage from the source or from households.
On the other hand, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Undersecretary for Staff Bureaus Manuel D. Gerochi and Presidential Adviser on Global Warming and Climate Change Undersecretary Carlos A. Garcia VI presented the Solid Waste Management Status and Forestation Profile and the weekly report about the Climate Change, respectively.
The President’s travel was aimed at raising people’s awareness about the effects of the global warming brought about by climate change and monitoring the status of the Solid Waste Management Program to attain the goal of a “Zero Basura” and a “Green Philippines”.
