Butuan – There has nothing to fear against possible A(H1N1) spread in Davao, this after a 4 year old boy from Butuan City was confined in Davao Medical Center.
Davao Medical Center Chief Dr. Leopoldo Vega briefed the local media that the hospital do not have the reason to refuse the first A(H1N1) patient in Mindanao, being the choice of the grandmother of the 4 year old boy instead of complying with DOH Caraga’s health protocol that all confirmed patients in the region will be confined at Caraga Regional Hospital in Surigao City, although it was emphasized that the patient has DOH-Caraga Regional Director’s referral.
The 4 year old boy including his grandmother, a 9 year old girl who had close contact with the patient who is exhibiting flu like symptoms and the girl’s parents are now at the isolation ward of Davao Medical Center, situated away from the main building.
While the ambulance driver who transport the patient from Butuan to Davao and the accompanying health personnel followed directives in handling cases as this by wearing proper protective gear.
According to Dr. Vega following the routine protocol there is no chance of spreading the virus.
He assured the public that nurses and medical personnel at the isolation ward of Davao Medical Center are equipped with protective gears and these are properly disposed of after use and strictly observed washing of hands thoroughly and constantly reminded to practice good hygiene before leaving the isolation ward.
The quarantine and treatment of said patients will last 5-7 days until such time throat swab tests yielded negative results for A(H1N1) from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine of the Department of Health.
The boy had just come from Hongkong, where he was accompanied by his grandmother to visit his parents who are working there when he developed fever few days after arriving in Butuan on June 13 and was confirmed with A(H1N1) on June 19. (photo by Edgar Arro)
