Robbery incidents on small-scale mining areas in Caraga Region strike anew

BUTUAN CITY – Robbery incidents victimizing small-scale miners In Caraga Region who sacrificed to dig tunnels in rocky, slippery sometimes cliff, uphill mountains just to search for the elusive dust of gold and other minerals happened again and now more bold and daring.

Many similar cases in the past have been unresolved until now.

Caraga Police official report claimed a 37 year old small-scale miner, married who has six children and a resident of Purok 1, Barangay San Isidro, Santiago, Agusan del Norte was the latest victim.

Santiago Municipal Police Office in their official report said small-scale miner Ernie Catacte Oclarit was shot with the used of unknown caliber of firearm by group of armed men estimated to be ten fully armed individuals in front of his colleagues in the publicly known gold rush area of the mountainous part of Tagbak, Sitio Sarog, Barangay San Isidro, Santiago, Agusan del Norte Monday.

Not contented with the used of bladed weapons, the suspects hacked Oclarit several times in the neck and other parts of the body to make sure the victim is dead, the police report said.

After the gruesome killing, the suspects fled away to unknown direction and brought along with them four sacks of soils and rocks believed to have been contained dust of gold from the tunnel Oclarit and companions have dug for weeks.

Cadaver of the victim was brought b his companions to Poblacion proper for post mortem examination by authorities. Police said they are still conducting investigation of the incident.

No area in the counrty which have more approved and still pending applications for mining permits both small and large-scale than Caraga Region.

Concerned environmentalists have earlier warned concerned government agencies such as the loca DENR, EMB and the Bureau of Mines and Geo-Sciences to put house in order first before accepting left ad right applications or face consequences of environmental disasters both man-made and natural.

Many have also been killed by landslide one incident was a pregnant woman who fetched her husband) for food in gold rush areas and other mining areas. in Caraga Region
