BUTUAN CITY – The two provinces of Agusan in Caraga Region which was a one province forty two years ago will separately mark its 42nd year Charter Day after it was divided into two provinces by virtue of Republic Act 4979 signed into law on June 17, 1967.

The law was principally authored by then Agusan Rep. Jose C. Aquino, Sr. of the lone congressional district of Agusan.

A major city street (J.C. Aquino Avenue) here in Butuan, in fact the longest and the widest, was named after the late congressman whose namesake son Jose Aquino, II is the incumbent Congressman representing the first congressional of Agusan del Norte (Las Nieves) and Butuan City.

Butuan City was the seat of the provincial government of Agusan del Norte until on August 16, 2000 under Republic Act 8811 authored by then 2nd District Agusan del Norte Rep. Roan Libarios (now held by Lakas Rep. Edelmiro Atega Amante), the provincial seat was transferred to Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte.

Cabadbaran was earlier converted into a city but lately the Supreme Court through its decision revert it back into a municipality status like what it did to other 15 newly created cities in the country.

Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur is the seat of the provincial government of the other Agusan province, Agusan del Sur.

Today the twin provinces are bustling with tourism, agriculture and business potentials. Both provinces have rich deposit of mineral resources.

The two provincial governments usually celebrated the two Araw Ng Agusans into week-long festivities that start June 12 celebration of the Philippine Independence Day.
