BUTUAN CITY- Two persons, a police officer and the suspect in a hostage-taking incident were killed after a grenade exploded inside police station compound in Baungon town, Bukidnon province early dawn this morning.
Bukidnon Police in their report claimed hostage taking suspect Renato Balboa believed to be mentally deranged took hostage two children and four nephews of businessman Reynaldo Marvan after allegedly Marvan turned down request of Balboa to use Marvan’s service vehicle.
Balboa was allegedly brandishing an apple-type hand grenade and removed the hand grenade safety pin when he took hostage the children. Marvan was forced to allow usage of his vehicle to oblige Balboa’s demand.
Balboa allegedly wanted to go to Kinoguitan town in Misamis Oriental which is more than 100 kilometers away from Baungon.
The hostage-taking drama prompted Police Officer 2 Leo Nalita of the Baungon Municipal Police Office to the crime scene to appease the suspect thinking that after allowing usage of the vehicle, Balboa will release the hostage taking victims.
It was clear on the report why Marvan’s vehicle went to Baungon Police Station instead and who ordered it that upon reaching the police station compound a commotion ensued between P02 Leo Nalita and the suspect.
The two died on the spot after the hand grenade felled into the hands of the suspect and exploded.
Luckily, all the hostage taking victims escaped unhurt with some suffered minor bruises and wounds as a result of the explosion. A portion of the police station was damaged due to the impact of the explosion.
Baungon Police said they are still conducting investigation of the incident.
