The Nato Farmers’ Cooperative (NAFAMCO) in Barangay Nato, Esperanza, Agusan del Sur, used to dry its rice and corn harvests on plastic mats and sacks spread on bare ground (left photo), or by transporting the grain to a solar dryer in another barangay, which added to the production costs. The barangay’s new 480-square-meter grains solar drying facility (right), completed in October 2010 by USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program in partnership with NAFAMCO and the municipal government, has enabled the 75-member cooperative and other farmers in the community to dry their grain more efficiently and to diminish post-harvest losses, thereby earning more for their production efforts. This facility is one of more than 1,190 GEM barangay infrastructure projects completed in Mindanao, under the oversight of the Mindanao Development Authority. GEM
